A FREE training course aimed to give you both a practical and theoretical knowledge of the media industry to boost in the development of your career in the industry.
It is also a City and Guilds Level 2 course, and was created with input from Skillset making it an industry recognised qualification. In addition to the tutored sessions, you will need to commit a little time to self-study and on-line research. The tutored sessions are outlined below:
Dates, Topics and Tutors:
Tuesday 10 November (evening session) 5.30pm for 6pm start – 9pm finish
Topic – Structure of the audio-visual industries and associated bodies
Tutor: ANTHONY SKATES Anthony Skates currently works as Research & Bid Manager for Marketing Gloucester Limited. Prior to this he was regional manager for Skillset the Sector Skills Council for the Creative Media and Head of Business and Skills Development at South West Screen.
Friday 13 November (full day session) 9am for 9.30am – 7pm finish
Topic – Current and emerging technologies in the audio-visual industries
Tutor: GREG BROWNING Greg is media producer, film-maker and and Director of Silicon19 Media Ltd. Having completed his post-graduate training at the BBC, Greg worked as a Network Analyst for BBC Transmission and Crown Castle International (now part of National Grid Wireless) finally working in a Mergers and Acquisitions technical due diligence team on broadcast and telecoms privatisation projects throughout Europe. There will be a practical element to this full day session.
Saturday 14 November (full day) 9am start – 5pm finish
Morning Session 9am–12 noon Topic – Working practices and protocols in the audio-visual industries
Tutor: ANDY FREEDMAN Andy is Head of the Cirencester Media Academy which provides training for industry professionals, students and the community. At various times Andy has been part of Bristol Film Makers Co-op, wrote scripts for BBC schools TV and was involved in Media education and training in Bristol and London. He represented the South West on the BFI’s Film and Video Forum, has been a consultant for the Film Council and is involved in a number of industry training projects, including the development of media student units for Edexcel. There will be a practical element to this session.
Afternoon Session 1pm – 5pm Topic – Financial responsibilities of employees
Tutor: PATRICIA KINAHAN Trish is a Tax Partner at Hazlewoods LLP and is both a qualified accountant and chartered tax adviser. Trish is an experienced speaker and has presented on a wide range of tax related matters to various different audiences including Business Link and the Gloucestershire Media Group. Trish is also a member of the small business sub committee of the Chartered Institute of Taxation.
Monday 16 November (evening session) 5.30pm for 6pm start – 9pm finish
Topic – Employment rights and responsibilities
Tutors: GUY SHEPPARD AND CHRIS HAMMOND Wiggin LLP is a boutique media law firm and its lawyers are recognised as experts in the constantly evolving field of media law. We focus exclusively on media with particular emphasis on film, music, sport, gaming, technology, broadcast and publishing.
Guy is a senior associate in the Film and TV group at Wiggin LLP. Guy acts for a number of international media businesses and he specialises in all aspects of film and television financing and production from rights creation and acquisition through to development, finance, production and distribution.
Chris is an assistant in the employment team at Wiggin LLP. Chris provides specialist employment law advice to companies involved in all aspects of the media sector and his in-house experience (he spent 7 months on secondment to the British Phonographic Industry) is highly valued by his clients.
Saturday 21 November (full day) 9am Start – 9pm finish
Morning Session 9am –2pm Topic – Health and safety within the audio-visual industries
Tutor: DAVE MIDDLEMISS Dave is Director of PPD Solutions, a Gloucestershire based training company specialising in providing training solutions in First Aid (HSE Approved), Manual Handling, Risk Assessment, COSHH health and safety training courses in the South West covering Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud, Bristol and Swindon.
PPD Solutions also delivers the Professional Trainer Certificates giving individuals the skills and knowledge to deliver imaginative and stimulating presentations or training sessions. Organisations benefit from having a highly effective trainer. They also have network of associated trainers who can deliver first aid training throughout the UK. There will be a practical element to this session.

Creative Industry Employers session
Evening Structure:- Group discussion about the current opportunities and trends in the creative industries locally and within the region
- Individual sessions with a media employer focusing on your existing skills and business objectives and ways of addressing any obstacles or skills gaps

Refreshments:
A light meal will be provided on all evening sessions, and Lunch plus refreshment breaks will be offered during the full day sessions. This will consist of sandwiches, light snacks, tea, coffee and soft drinks.

Eligibility
REMEMBER: To qualify for FREE funding for these courses you need to be:
- A minimum of 19 years old
- Living or working in Gloucestershire
- Be either employed by a small business (between 1-249 employees)
- Or running your own business (this can include freelancers if you have a business bank account or are self-employed for tax purposes)
- Be working in the creative/media industry, or have some knowledge of the creative/media industry and wish to pursue a career in this field
Refundable Deposit:
The course is free, however, as we only receive our funding once individuals have achieved the qualification linked to the course, we do ask for a deposit of £100, which is refunded in full upon successful completion.
